Botanical illustration in the mid-19th century, when this book was released, was a popular form of scientific illustration. It involved the creation of highly detailed and accurate drawings and paintings of plants, often for the purpose of documenting new species or illustrating botanical texts.

During this period, advances in printing technology allowed for the mass production of illustrated botanical books, which greatly increased the availability and accessibility of botanical knowledge. This led to a surge in demand for botanical illustrators, who were often trained artists with a keen eye for detail and a deep understanding of botany.

Botanical illustration in the mid-19th century was often created using watercolors, which allowed for a high degree of detail and color accuracy. Illustrators often worked from live specimens or preserved plants, carefully studying and observing their structure, color, and texture before beginning their drawings or paintings.

Botanical illustration in the mid-19th century played an important role in advancing our understanding of the natural world.
