Vintage Award Certificate Ephemera
This is the second installment I’m doing of free ephemera sheets made up of images from school supply catalogs from the late 1800s. I decided to post them separately because I was afraid these vintage award certificates would get lost in the shuffle if I dumped them in with the other post of vintage school supply ephemera. I felt like they deserved their own page. However, you’ll definitely want to check out the other vintage school supply ephemera post because there are a lot of great images including classroom furniture, a slate, ink bottles, chalkboard erasers, etc.
Also, make sure you visit the ephemera section of my library of free printables. You may like these Victorian magic props catalog ephemera sheets or these vintage shop fixtures ephemera sheets and others.
Scroll down, and you’ll find two different ephemera sheets of award certificates and some other school supplies.
If you enjoy these free journal papers, be sure to follow me on Instagram and Pinterest, so you’ll see when I post new ones.
During the late 19th century, classroom awards played a multifaceted role, encompassing both scholastic achievement and character development. Merit Certificates held a place of honor, recognizing students who excelled in subjects like reading, writing, and arithmetic. Often featuring intricate designs and elegant handwriting, these certificates symbolized a student's dedication and success in their studies.
Perfect Attendance Awards held a unique significance, honoring students who demonstrated unwavering commitment by attending school regularly without any absences. This recognition underscored the importance of punctuality and responsibility, fostering a sense of dedication to education.
Parallel to academic accolades, Character Awards acknowledged virtues such as kindness, respect, and leadership. These awards emphasized the significance of ethical behavior and interpersonal skills, aiming to shape students into well-rounded individuals. Spelling Bees and Math Contests introduced an element of friendly competition, celebrating linguistic and mathematical aptitude while encouraging skill development.
It's important to note that the availability and nature of these awards varied based on factors like the school's resources, the teacher's preferences, and the cultural norms of the time. Classroom awards in the late 19th century were often more personalized and focused on recognizing individual efforts and achievements within the educational context of the era.
