Daguerreotype Portraits Collage Sheet

This printable collage sheet features daguerreotype portraits. The images are far from perfect, but I love their rustic feel. The woman in the upper left corner is Harriet Beecher Stowe, author of Uncle Tom’s Cabin.

Daguerreotypes were the first successful form of commercial photography and were introduced in the late 1830s by Louis Daguerre. The process involved exposing a silver-plated copper sheet to light, which was then chemically treated to produce a direct positive image. The resulting images were highly detailed and had a distinctive, mirror-like quality due to the highly polished metal surface. The images were also one-of-a-kind and could not be reproduced easily, unlike later forms of photography. The process was slow and the images were delicate and easily damaged. They were usually housed in small, decorative cases or frames to protect the delicate plate. Daguerreotypes were often considered to be prized possessions and were popular in the mid-19th century, particularly as portrait photographs.
