Ocean Gardens Collage Sheets
The underwater vignettes on these printable collage sheets are from a book entitled, Ocean Gardens from the mid 19th century.
I included a sheet of 2.5” x 3.5” images for ATCs or journal tags and some larger images that would make for pretty backgrounds.
Ocean gardens from the mid-19th century refer to a concept that emerged during that period, focusing on the exploration and study of marine life and ecosystems. These "ocean gardens" were essentially early marine laboratories or aquatic gardens where scientists, naturalists, and curious individuals could observe and study marine organisms in a controlled environment.
The term "ocean garden" reflected the idea of cultivating and studying marine life in a manner similar to how plants are cultivated in terrestrial gardens. These early marine laboratories aimed to bring marine life closer to researchers, allowing them to conduct experiments, make observations, and gain a deeper understanding of the complex ecosystems present in the oceans.
During the mid-19th century, there was a growing interest in marine biology and oceanography, fueled by technological advancements such as improved microscopy and sampling techniques. As a result, these ocean gardens played a crucial role in advancing the understanding of marine ecosystems, contributing to the growth of marine science as a field.
Over time, the concept of ocean gardens evolved into more sophisticated marine research institutions and laboratories, paving the way for the modern study of marine biology, oceanography, and related fields.
