Angel Ephemera Printables

Free Angel Ephemera

These vintage angel ephemera printables are made up of relief scrap images from the late 1800s and early 1900s. I can think of a lot of ways to use these lovelies. They would make great journal or scrapbook fodder or nice DIY card making embellishments. I could also see decoupaging them on a wooden jewelry box or any other number of craft projects. I am posting these as Christmas ephemera, but I’ll also file them in my Easter Printables and ephemera categories since they are so versatile.

Scroll down, and you will find two different sheets of angels. It’s always interesting to see the different print qualities of ephemera I discover. It’s not always consistent. You’ll notice that the angels on the first ephemera sheet were printed at a higher quality. However, even though the angels on the second sheet are a bit more grainy, I still like the vintage feel they have. I don’t have an explanation for the discrepancy. I can only guess that the second sheet was printed on a less advanced printing press or was maybe meant to be a less expensive option.

Make sure you also visit the Christmas Section of my library for more free Christmas ephemera sheets such as these Christmas ephemera printables, these pinecone collage sheets, or these vintage Christmas illustrations. Paper relief scraps are a unique and fascinating art form that emerged in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The origins of paper relief scraps can be traced back to the invention of the chromolithography process in the mid-1800s. This printing technique produced high-quality, multi-colored images on paper at a relatively low cost. This made it accessible to a wider audience and fueled the popularity of scrap pictures.

Paper relief scraps were typically made by die-cutting printed sheets of paper into various shapes and designs. This process created a three-dimensional effect, with the raised areas often being further enhanced with embossing or gilding. The designs ranged from simple floral motifs to elaborate scenes depicting animals, people, landscapes, or religious themes.

Paper relief scraps were used for a variety of purposes that are similar to how we might use them today.

  • Scrapbooking: These pieces were nice additions to scrapbooks, adding visual interest and personalizing the narratives.

  • Decoupage: Delicate scraps were used to decorate furniture, boxes, and other objects, adding a touch of elegance and charm.

  • Greeting Cards and Gift Tags: These pieces were often used to create handmade and personalized greetings.

  • Educational Materials: Scraps with alphabets, numbers, or educational scenes were used in schools and homes to enhance learning.

Modern artists and crafters can creatively utilize vintage paper relief scraps in their mixed media artwork by incorporating them into collages, layered backgrounds, and decoupage projects. These nostalgic elements can also be employed in altered art, bookbinding, and as embellishments for handmade cards or stationery. Integrating vintage paper relief scraps into mixed media paintings or three-dimensional assemblages adds depth and visual interest while creating silhouettes or shadow effects with these materials can evoke a sense of history and memory. Additionally, framing vintage paper relief scraps or combining them with modern elements offers opportunities for unique and compelling compositions, emphasizing the fusion of old and new aesthetics.
