Hot Air Balloon and Dirigible Postcard Ephemera Sheets
The hot air balloon and dirigible illustrations that make up these free printable ephemera sheets come from a series of vintage French postcards that date back to 1909.
I almost called the dirigibles Zeppelins, but after some investigation, I learned that would be incorrect. They can only be called a Zeppelin if they were manufactured by a particular company - Luftschiffbau Zeppelin of Germany. However, I could have called them airships because, as I understand it, a dirigible is an airship that can be steered. You may ask, “What about blimps?” Well, blimps are nonrigid. Their shape is maintained by the pressure of the gasses inside it.
I also felt like some of the dirigibles looked remarkably similar to the hot air balloons, so what makes one a balloon and one a dirigible? The difference is in the steering. A dirigible can be steered, whereas, the hot air balloons float freely.
