Bird Eggs Collage Sheets
The egg illustrations on these free printable collage sheets are from a book on the reproductive history of birds published in the 1850s.
When I was a kid I always thought that if you cracked open a blue eggshell, what came out would also be blue. I never got my hands on a blue egg to test the theory until I was an adult. When a friend gave me some of her hen’s blue eggs, logic told me the egg inside wouldn’t be blue, but I couldn’t shake the thought from the back of my mind that maybe, just maybe, it would. Sometimes keeping a little childhood innocence can be fun.
Scroll all the way down, and you’ll find two different free vintage printables. The first is a sheet of 2.5” x 3.5” Artist Trading Card-sized images, and the second is a sheet of gift tags that would be a nice addition to a junk journal or vintage scrapbook spread, but you could also use them for gift packaging.
If you would like more free ephemera with eggs, I have quite a few other collage sheets with eggs. I also have lots of bird printables you should check out.
The color of an eggshell is like a fingerprint, unique to each type of bird that lays it. Just like how people have different skin colors, different breeds of birds lay eggs with shells that can be white, brown, blue, or even green. This color variation happens because of special pigments in the bird's body. Think of these pigments like the paint used to color Easter eggs. They're responsible for giving each egg its distinctive hue.
One big factor in eggshell color is genetics. Different breeds of chickens inherit genes that determine the color of their eggshells. For example, breeds like Leghorns usually lay white eggs, while others like Rhode Island Reds typically lay brown ones. It's like how some families have certain traits passed down from generation to generation. Similarly, certain breeds, like Araucanas or Ameraucanas, have unique genes that allow them to lay eggs with blue or green shells. It's a genetic twist that adds even more variety to the egg aisle!
Another interesting aspect is the role of the bird's diet. While genetics play the biggest part, what a bird eats can also influence the color of its eggs, although to a lesser extent. Some farmers might feed their hens special supplements or foods rich in pigments, like marigold petals, which can subtly affect the shell color. So, just like how our diet can impact our health and appearance, a chicken's diet can have a small impact on the color of its eggs. But remember, genetics still reign supreme when it comes to determining the main color of an eggshell.
I hope you’ll add these to your supplies for art journaling, junk journaling, bullet journaling, scrapbooking, collage, artist trading cards (ATCs) and other mixed media artwork and crafts.
