Butterflies & Moths Collage Sheets

The images on these printable collage sheets come from a book about insects from 1789. I am always amazed by the quality of illustrations from that long ago and that the books survived at all.

Print these free collage sheets out, and add them to your supplies for art journaling, junk journaling, bullet journaling, collage, artist trading cards (ATCs), scrapbooking, and other mixed media artwork.

Butterflies and moths, belonging to the same group called Lepidoptera, share many similarities but also have notable differences. One of the most obvious distinctions is their appearance. Butterflies are famous for their bright and colorful wings with intricate patterns, while moths tend to have more subdued colors, like browns and grays, although some moths can be colorful, like the Luna moth.

Another significant difference is their antennae. Butterflies have slim, club-shaped antennae with small knobs at the ends, giving them a sleek look. In contrast, moths typically have feathery or hair-like antennae that look like a comb, which helps them detect scents, especially pheromones released by potential mates.

Their activity patterns also set them apart. Butterflies are usually active during the day, relying on sunlight to warm up for flight, while moths are mostly active at night, being drawn to artificial lights. Some moths are active during dawn and dusk, a time called crepuscular.

Lastly, they differ in their pupal stages. Butterflies form a hard, smooth case called a chrysalis, which hangs from a support structure. Moths, on the other hand, create a silk cocoon, typically spun around themselves and attached to various surfaces like leaves or tree bark. These differences highlight the intriguing diversity within the Lepidoptera group, showing how butterflies and moths have evolved distinct adaptations.
