Butterfly Collage Ephemera
I’ve said this before, but I’ll say it again, you can’t have too many butterfly collage sheets. And what with it being spring now, these vintage postcard images seemed like the perfect subject matter for this collection of free collage ephemera printables. A few pretty moths snuck their way in too.
Scroll all the way down, and you’ll find three different free ephemera printables for you to download and add to your mixed-media journaling supplies. The first printable is made up of 2.5” x 4.25” images that would make great journal cards or each butterfly could be cut out individually and added to mixed media collages and journal spreads. The second collage sheet has mixed-size images. The larger images could be used as backgrounds, or you could fussy cut the butterflies and moths to add to your journal or scrapbook. The last sheet of collage ephemera is made up of smaller 1.5” x 2.5” vintage postcard images that might make cute journal tags. Those are all just suggestions, though. As always, let your imagination soar.
I have more free butterfly collage sheets in my collection if you are interested. You might also like these exotic butterflies and moths collage sheets, these British butterflies sheets, or these painted butterflies and insects sheets.
I love using butterfly ephemera in my art journal. I’ve found that when I have a journal spread that feels like it needs a little something more, a butterfly often does the trick. They are such great mixed-media subjects. There are many ways to use them in junk journals, art journals, vintage scrapbooks, and other mixed-media artwork. And this collection of free collage ephemera makes it that much easier.
You could use bigger journal cards, like some of the ones directly above and below, as background elements for your pages. Layer them with vintage papers, ephemera, old book pages, etc. to create dynamic backgrounds. Alternatively, trim smaller butterfly illustrations to create borders or frames around photos or journaling.
Larger individual butterfly illustrations make great focal points on your pages. You can either use them as standalone elements or embellish them further with paints, stamps, or other decorative elements.
Cut out individual butterflies and use them as embellishments throughout your journal or scrapbook. You can arrange them across your pages, tuck them into pockets, or use them to accent journaling areas. Try layering the butterflies to add depth and dimension to your pages. Use foam or glue dots to lift some butterflies off the page, creating a dynamic layout.
I love surprises and interactive elements in journals. You could glue the bodies of some of the butterflies to the page, but leave the wings unglued, so they flip up. You could also hide little messages, quotes, or images behind the butterfly wings to add an element of surprise to your journal or scrapbook.
There's never a wrong way to use butterfly ephemera in your art journal, junk journal, vintage scrapbook, etc. Just remember to have fun and experiment until you find something you like. I hope you enjoy using these free collage ephemera sheets.
