Lindenia: Iconography of Orchids is a publication that featured illustrations and descriptions of orchids. It was created by Belgian orchid collector and nurseryman Jean Jules Linden in the late 19th century.
The publication was named after Linden himself, who was a prominent figure in the orchid world during the Victorian era. Linden traveled extensively in search of rare and exotic orchids, and his collection included many new and unusual species.
Lindenia features beautifully detailed illustrations of orchids which are accompanied by detailed descriptions of each orchid species, including its habitat, characteristics, and growing requirements.
The publication was important because it helped to document and disseminate knowledge about orchids during a time when many new species were being discovered and cultivated. Lindenia remains a valuable resource for orchid enthusiasts and researchers today, as it provides a historical record of many orchid species that are now rare or extinct in the wild.
Orchids were very popular during the Victorian period when these illustrations were published. In fact, the Victorians were so fascinated with orchids that they developed a craze known as "orchidelirium" in which they would go to great lengths to acquire and cultivate rare and exotic orchids.
The popularity of orchids during the Victorian era was due in part to their beauty and the wide variety of colors, shapes, and sizes they come in. Additionally, the development of new horticultural techniques during this time made it possible to cultivate and hybridize orchids more easily, which further fueled their popularity.
Orchids were not just prized for their beauty, but also for their exoticism and rarity. Many Victorian collectors would travel to far-off lands to acquire rare orchid specimens, and the display of these orchids in the home or in public exhibitions became a status symbol.
