These printable ephemera sheets are made up of images from a garment cutter’s book of diagrams from 1888. Notice that I didn’t call them sewing patterns. That’s because these diagrams and measurements would be referenced to make the actual patterns used to cut out your fabric.

My mom taught me how to sew when I was in fifth grade. I loved going to the fabric store to pick out a pattern and then the fabric to go with it. I always sewed from a pattern, but the cost of fabric has gotten so exorbitant that I don’t do it anymore. My garments don’t always turn out as planned, so I can’t justify wasting that kind of money if I produce a dud. Instead, I buy clothes inexpensively at thrift stores and refashion them. Sometimes I buy things that just need a small size adjustment or repair, but it’s also fun to buy something really ugly and try to make it wearable.

I made a sheet of ATCs with the whole pages, but I really liked the illustrations of the people and the garments, so I made a sheet of each of those too. Make sure you scroll all the way down to see all three options.

A garment cutter's diagram, also known as a cutting layout or cutting diagram, is a visual representation of how a pattern should be placed on the fabric in order to efficiently cut out all of the necessary pieces for a garment. The diagram typically shows the exact placement of each pattern piece on the fabric, along with the recommended direction of the grain line and any other important markings or guidelines.

The purpose of a garment cutter's diagram is to maximize the use of fabric while minimizing waste. By carefully arranging the pattern pieces on the fabric, the cutter can ensure that they use the least amount of material possible, which can help to reduce costs and improve the overall efficiency of the cutting process.

Garment cutter's diagrams can be created using a variety of tools, including specialized software programs or manual methods such as hand-drawn sketches or paper templates. The specific details included in a cutting diagram will depend on the type of garment being produced, the size of the fabric pieces, and other factors such as the thickness and stretch of the material being used.
