The beautiful vintage floral bouquet images in these free printable collage sheets come from yet another book about the language of flowers. This one was entitled, The Poetical Language of Flowers, or, The Pilgrimage of Love. With a name like that, I might just tag these for Valentine’s Day.
In my research, I’ve come across a number of books written in the 1800s about the ‘language of flowers” or the “language of plants.” Evidently, it was a very popular topic. However, the author of this particular book really gets a dig in at all of the other language of flowers books in his preface by stating that, "All the books which have hitherto treated on the Language of the Flowers are, with the exception of a few slight alterations and additions, mere translations from the French work of Aime Martin; nor am I aware of any production in the English language on this subject which professes o be original, saving the present." I guess that was his way of saying that only his book and that of Aime Martin are worth a darn. Regardless of his feelings, I’ve found the illustrations in each of these books to be beautiful and great ephemera for junk journals.

The history of floral bouquets can be traced back to ancient civilizations, where flowers were often used for religious and ceremonial purposes. Flowers were also used as gifts and tokens of love and affection.
In ancient Greece and Rome, bouquets were made with herbs and flowers and were given as gifts to express love, gratitude, and congratulations. They were also used to adorn statues and altars in temples and shrines.
During the Middle Ages, the giving of bouquets as gifts became a popular tradition among the wealthy and noble classes. Flowers were often chosen for their symbolic meanings, and bouquets were given as tokens of love, friendship, and loyalty.
In the 18th and 19th centuries, bouquet making became an art form in Europe. The Victorians, in particular, were known for their elaborate bouquets, which often included a wide variety of flowers and other materials.
The hand-tied bouquet, which is a bouquet that is not arranged in a vase, but is held together with a ribbon or twine and presented as a gift, is a more recent development in the history of bouquets, it became popular in the 20th century.
