When I say vintage illustrations, I mean it. The insect drawings on these collage sheets come from a book that dates back to 1792. There’s a nice little selection of bugs including some butterflies, beetles, bees, grasshoppers, etc.

Scroll all the way down, and you’ll find a sheet of 2.5” x 4.25” journal cards and a sheet of 2” x 3” journal tags. I think these would work great for making specimen slides for a junk journal.

If you enjoy these free printables, be sure to follow on Instagram and Pinterest, so you’ll see when I post new ones.

In the late 18th century, insect illustrations played a significant role in scientific exploration and documentation. This period marked the rise of natural history as a field of study, and scientists and artists began to collaborate in creating detailed and accurate illustrations of insects.

Scientific expeditions and explorations during that time led to the discovery of numerous insect species. As a result, there was a growing demand for accurate representations of these newfound creatures. Artists and engravers worked closely with scientists to produce illustrations that were both scientifically informative and visually appealing.

The techniques used for insect illustrations during this period varied. Some artists drew insects directly from specimens, while others relied on preserved specimens, sketches, and written descriptions. Engraving was a common method for reproducing illustrations in print, allowing for the mass distribution and dissemination of scientific knowledge.

Insect illustrations from this period not only aimed to depict the physical appearance of insects but also to showcase their behavior, habitats, and life cycles. Artists focused on capturing intricate details such as the delicate structure of wings, antennae, and mouthparts.

If you are looking for more insect printables to use in your junk journal, art journal, scrapbook, etc., take a look at these insect illustration collage sheets or these insects in the garden collage sheets. I also have a number of butterfly journal printables too.
