Keep reading to learn more about the history of black cat symbolism, ways to use these printables in your Halloween crafts, and how to incorporate them into your decor and journaling projects.
About the Black Cat Printables
The black cat images in these printables are scans of vintage relief scraps, popular decorative elements from the 19th and early 20th centuries. Relief scraps, also known as die-cuts or embossed scraps, were intricately printed and embossed paper images often used to decorate greeting cards, scrapbooks, and household items. These colorful, pre-cut images added a three-dimensional look to paper crafts.
With their colorful bows, I like to think these kitties will bring good luck to you this Halloween, but the bows on some of them are positioned so that they would be easy to cut off if you’d like them to look a little more ominous.
I created two collage sheets for you to choose from. The first sheet is made up of larger images. If you keep scrolling you’ll find a second sheet with slightly smaller cat images.
History and Symbolism of Black Cats
Black cats are iconic symbols during the Halloween season, but their association with mystery and superstition stretches back centuries. In many ancient cultures, black cats were seen as magical creatures, often linked with the supernatural and occult. Their midnight coats and piercing eyes were thought to give them mystical powers, as they seemed to appear and disappear in the darkness, almost as if by magic. But what makes black cats so special, and how did they come to symbolize both good and bad luck?
Black Cats in Folklore and Superstition
In medieval Europe, black cats took on an aura of mystery and magic. People began associating black cats with witches, believing that witches could shapeshift into cats to carry out their spells and escape detection. The idea of the “witch’s familiar” (an animal that assists a witch in her magical practices) became popular, and black cats were often suspected of being these mystical companions. Due to this connection with witches, black cats became symbols of suspicion, sometimes leading to persecution and mistreatment.
However, in other parts of the world, black cats were viewed quite differently. In Japanese and British folklore, black cats are often seen as symbols of good fortune. For example, in Japan, owning a black cat is said to bring prosperity. In the United Kingdom, it’s considered lucky if a black cat crosses your path, and in Scottish tradition, a black cat arriving on your doorstep is a sign of coming prosperity. Sailors in England even kept black cats on board their ships, believing they would bring good luck on long journeys.
Today, black cats are beloved pets and celebrated for their mysterious allure, especially around Halloween. They’re symbols of independence, elegance, and a little bit of mischief—perfect for inspiring your Halloween decor and crafts!
